Heterotrophic Carbon Dioxide Fixation Products of Euglena: EFFECTS OF AMMONIUM.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The metabolic products of heterotrophic (dark) CO(2) fixation by Euglena gracilis Klebs strain Z Pringsheim were separated and identified. They consisted of amino acids, phosphorylated compounds, tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates, and nucleotides. Exposure of the cells to NH(4) (+) after a period of NH(4) (+) deprivation stimulated heterotrophic CO(2) fixation almost 4-fold, modifying the spectrum of the fixation products. In particular, the NH(4) (+) treatment stimulated fixation of CO(2) into glutamine, glycine, alanine, and serine.

Gamma-irradiation effect: variation of photosynthetic activity of Euglena.
OBJECTIVE To study the effects of gamma-ray irradiation on carbon fixation (Specific production rate: SPR), CO2 utilization efficiency (CUE) and electron transfer rate (ETR) in the photosynthetic flagellate Euglena gracilis strain Z in a dose-response dependent manner. METHODS Euglena cells were cultured in an inorganic nutrient medium containing ammonium chloride or proteose peptone. Cells w...
متن کاملHeavy Carbon as a Tracer in Heterotrophic Carbon Dioxide Assimilation*
The first proof that heterotrophic, non-photosynthetic bacteria can fix carbon dioxide was presented in 1935 by Wood and Werkman (15). This investigation introduced the first experimental evidence that carbon dioxide serves as a building material in synthetic reactions of all forms of life, whether simple or complex. The synthesis of citric acid from oxalacetate by avian tissue was shown by Kre...
متن کاملProkaryotic Responses to Ammonium and Organic Carbon Reveal Alternative CO2 Fixation Pathways and Importance of Alkaline Phosphatase in the Mesopelagic North Atlantic
To decipher the response of mesopelagic prokaryotic communities to input of nutrients, we tracked changes in prokaryotic abundance, extracellular enzymatic activities, heterotrophic production, dark dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) fixation, community composition (16S rRNA sequencing) and community gene expression (metatranscriptomics) in 3 microcosm experiments with water from the mesopelagic ...
متن کاملChloroplast.Free Preparation from Euglena gracilis'
A bstract. A supernatant fraction, free of plstids, was prepared by centrifugation from Euglena gracilis and used to ascertain whether or not the inhibition of carbon dioxide fixation by oxygen, known as the Warburg effect, is entirely independent of the light-driven phase of photosyn-thesis. This fraction exhibited in the dark the main features of the Werburg effect; namely, an inverse relatio...
متن کاملChlorophyll Formation and Photosynthetic Competence in Euglena During Light-Induced Chloroplast Development in the Presence of 3, (3,4-dichlorophenyl) 1,1-Dimethyl Urea (DCMU).
The possibility that photosynthetic competence is gratuitous for light-induced chloroplast development in Euglena gracilis var. bacillaris was examined by incubating dark-grown resting cells in the light with DCMU, an inhibitor of photosynthesis. Under these conditions photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation was inhibited essentially completely at all times during chloroplast development, but ab...
